Gentlemen,
I place before you the several statistical tables, recording
the number of births, deaths, and marriages in our parish for 1878,
and such other sanitary information as my duty requires as
your Health Officer.

The one marked feature of the past year was, as we know
too well, great commercial depression; and sadly, although
naturally enough, this has shown itself in our low marriage
rate. In 1878 the marriage rate—15.3 per 1,000—was lower than
in any year since 1842 and 1813, when it was 14.7 and 15.2 per
1,000 respectively. In 1873, it was 17.6; in 1877, 15.8; and now
