MARRIAGES, 1877.— Table No. II.

No. of Marriages.
In quarter ending March427
,, ,, June496
„ „ September623
,, ,, December642
Total for year2,188

The marriage rate in Islington, therefore, was 17.2 per 1000
of the population for 1876, and for 1877 it was 16.76 per 1,000.
The marriage rate for the United Kingdom for 1876 was 16.7
per 1,000. In France it was 15.85, and in Spain 15.1 per 1,000.
It will be remarked that the number of marriages in Islington is
as nearly as possible the same for the years 1876 and 1877.
each case it will be noticed that there were fewer marriages in the
first quarter of the year, the number gradually increasing until
the December quarter, when it was about one-half as many again
as in the March quarter.
In 1876, 201,874 marriages took place in England and Wales.
This was a somewhat smaller number than usual; but the depressed
state of trade is sufficient to explain the fall. I may mention, however,
that the marriage rate was by no means injuriously affected by
Islington, but the reverse.
