TableNo.IX.

Area and Population of Islington in Census years 1801-71 of the parishes, &c., included at different periods within the London Bills of Mortality.

This table illustrates how enormous the population of Islington
has become since 1801. Then there were but 10,212 persons. It had
more than doubled in 1821 (22,417)—nearly quadrupled in 1831
(37,316)—whilst in 1871 it had increased to nearly four times
what it was in 1841, and over 21 times what it was in 1801.
Some explanation of how this increase is to be accounted for
during the last decade will be apparent by the next table.

TableNo.X.

Marriages, Births, and Deaths, 1861-71.

St. Mary, Islington.155,341213,77816,19467,52044,73422,78658,437

From this it will be noted that from 1861 to 1871 the excess of
registered births over deaths is 22,786. Hence it follows that over
35,000 immigrants came to reside in the district during the decade
of 1861—1871.
I may just note here the extent of Land and Water included
in the parish of Islington.
