TO THE
VESTRY OF ST. MARY, ISLINGTON.
Gentlemen,
In this my first Annual Report, which I have now the honour of presenting
to you, I have followed the arrangement adopted by my predecessor,
less for the sake of uniformity, than because it appears to me a simple and
excellent one. You will observe that the first part of the Report, headed
"Births, deaths, and sickness," refers to the year 1871, including, therefore,
only three months which belong to my period of office, and that the second
part, headed "Sanitary work of the year,'' refers to the period between
March 26th, 1871, and March 25th, 1872, which was equally divided between
Dr. Ballard and myself. You will, therefore, at once understand, that this
Eeport was prepared under exceptional and somewhat difficult circumstances.

BIRTHS, DEATHS, AND SICKNESS.

The births registered during the year are represented quarter by quarter in the following table:—

West Sub-District.East Sub-District.Whole Parish.

This table is to be taken to mean that the births in the whole parish
were, during the year, at the rate of about 35½ per thousand per annum,
on the estimated population for the middle of the year; but that the rate
was not the same for the two sides of the parish, that of the West SubDistrict
being 36.8, and that of the East Sub-District, 34.1 per thousand
per annum.
