exception of the cholera year (1794 cases) I have never registered so
many cases in August or indeed in any month of any year. The
following have been my highest numbers:—
August, 1857 327 cases
„ 1859 304 „
„ 1861 434 „
,,1863408 „
„ 1864 407 „
,,1867 326 „
With respect to the bronchitic affections, it is worthy of observation
that the diarrhæal season of this and the two last years has been marked
by an unusual prevalence of diseases of this class.
After a summer so hot as the present one has been, it behoves all
persons who are liable to suffer from chest affections in the winter to be
unusually careful in the avoidance of chills, and of exposure to other
known causes of bronchitis and catarrh. My tabulated experience
here has demonstrated that after summers of unusual heat, the winter
increase of these maladies takes place earlier than it does after cooler
summers.
EDWARD BALLARD, M.D.,
Medical Officer of Health.
