The general sickness, which was represented by 807 new cases in
the first week of the month, rose to 819 in the second week, to 846 in
the third week, and 930 in the fourth week. The cases of diarrhœal
affection recorded week by week were 122, 127, 141, and 209.
One word now about the Vaccinations. In my Annual Report I
mentioned the desirableness of renewing the vaccine virus in habitual
use, and that I intended to take some steps to effect this object here.
I have now obtained a supply of virus direct from the calf, and
vaccinated several children with it successfully. From these the virus
has now been propagated in other children up to the second and third
human generation, and I have arranged with four of our public
vaccinators to continue its use instead of that of the current lymph,
much of which has probably been in use since the time of Jenner. I
shall shortly be able to supply the remaining four Vaccinators.
Vestry Offices,
August 3rd, 1868.
EDWARD BALLARD, M.D.,
