Since my last report, the outbreak of contagious disease amongst the
dairy cows in this parish has taken place, and bids fair to extend
throughout the kingdom. As soon as I heard of it, I took the proper
measures to make myself acquainted with its nature, and communicated
the result of my inquiries to the Sanitary Committee. As the Vestry
have sanctioned the only proceeding which gives any prospect of
success in checking the progress of the plague, it is needless that I
should say more about it now.
The sad consequences of a high price of meat during the coming
winter, and of a deficiency of milk, can only be averted by the most
strenuous efforts at checking the malady, and by the united exertions
of the owners of stock and local authorities throughout the kingdom,
who should act together, in a friendly spirit, for the attainment of a
common object.
EDWARD BALLARD, M.D.,
Medical Officer of Health'
Vestry Offices,
August 9th, 1865.
