The total corrected by subtracting the births in the 53rd week, gives 5,786 births
for comparison with last year. If, then, our population has increased by 5 per cent.,
as estimated, it must chiefly have been by immigration from other places—a circumstance
which, as I have formerly shown (Fifth Annual Report, 1860), tends to augment
our death rate. It is again observable that, contrary to the ordinary rule, the number
of female births exceeded that of the males, although very slightly.
The number of persons who sought medical relief from the Parochial Surgeons,
and at the Institutions from which I receive regular returns, was 32,426.
DISTRICT MORTALITY.

The death rate as calculated for all, but principally for these, will be more or less considerably in excess of the truth—how much in excess any one of you can judge as closely as I can.
