REPORT
on the
SANITARY CONDITION OP ST. MARY, ISLINGTON,
FOR MAY, 1863.
No. LXXIV.
The mortality in the Parish has again been somewhat reduced, although during the
month of May it was still greatly above the average. The number of deaths
registered was 280, the corrected mean of the previous seven years being 223. Thus
we have lost by disease 47 persons in excess of what is usual at this period of the
year. On examining the mortuary table in connection with the tables for May in
previous years, the excess is found to be referable mainly to the larger number of
deaths recorded under the heads of small pox, scarlet fever, diphtheria, diseases of
the heart and old age.
The number of new cases of small pox attended during the month by the parochial
medical officers and those of the two Dispensaries was 134, more than twice
the number that occurred in April. The Irish courts by the turnpike, and the
Queen's Road district in the Hornsey Road have been the principal foci; but the
White Conduit and Bemerton districts have also suffered severely. A good number
of cases have also occurred in the streets about the Lower Road and in Lower Holloway.
The weekly numbers show a steady increase of the disease during the
month. They were as follow : 23, 31, 36, 43. The fatal cases were 15—ten in
the East and five in the West sub-district. They were as follow :—
