The amount of general sickness among the recipients of charitable medical
aid has been high, viz.: 3237 cases for 5 weeks in the total of Institutions,
against 2234 for the 4 weeks of February. In the pauper practice alone the
numbers stand 1248 against 869 in February, and against 886, 829, and 1110
in the March of previous years.
Of these 3237 cases, 747 were of acute pulmonary disease. In the pauper
practice the cases of pulmonary disease numbered 436, against a mean for
March of 247. Thirty cases of small-pox were reported to me by the Parochial
Surgeons and the two Dispensaries, and the disease is by no means un frequent
among the patients of private practitioners. The weekly numbers as returned
to me were 4, 4, 13, 4, 5. Nineteen patients entered the Small-pox Hospital
from the Parish. That Hospital has already admitted, this year, 384 cases.
The number of cases of scarlatina returned by the Parochial Surgeons and
Dispensaries is 25 against 30 in the 4 weeks of February. The weekly
numbers returned by the former and by the Islington Dispensary together
were 9, 7, 1, 2, 4. There were only 2 cases in the Districts attended by the
Holloway Dispensary.
