TO THE VESTRY OF ST. MART, ISLINGTON.
Gentlemen,
1. While awaiting the result of the census just taken, it is my duty to present to
you my Fifth Annual Report on the Sanitary condition of the Parish. Since it will be
necessary when these results are in my possession, to travel again over the same ground,
and to review our Sanitary position during 1860 and some previous years in the new
light which will then be thrown upon it, I shall abstain now from drawing any general
definite conclusions, limiting my remarks upon the Tables which form the basis of
the Report within the boundaries that prudence under such circumstances appears to
prescribe.
MORTALITY.
2. The deaths of residents in Islington which actually occurred between the 1st of
January and the 31st December, 1860, amounted to 2845. To these must be added,
as fairly belonging to us, 147 of the deaths which took place in the various general
and special hospitals, lying-in institutions, and lunatic asylums in London. This
addition raises our mortality to 2992, an excess of 181 deaths above the mortality of
1859.
3. The mortality of the two Sub-districts similarly corrected is represented in the
West Sub-district by 1511 deaths, and in the East by 1481. That of the West,
therefore, is higher by 16 than the mortality of 1859, and that of the East higher by
165 deaths.

4. The births registered during the year amounted to 5184, viz. 2655 males and 2529 females; the total number being precisely equally distributed between the two Sub-districts thus:—
