cautions. It has been shown by experiment that the cheap disinfectant,
introduced by M. M. Corne and Demeaux, consisting of a mixture of coal-tar
with sand or marl is most effectual for this purpose, causing the immediate
disappearance of all fœtor and freely developing ozone. There have been
only two deaths from diarrhea.
The sickness generally among the poor has been very much less than in
June of the two last years. The epidemic of small-pox is apparently dying
out, only six cases have been returned to me during the month. The number
of cases of measles returned by the parochial surgeons and dispensaries
together has amounted to 134, the weekly numbers being 26, 21, 22, 40 and
25. There have been as few cases of diarrhoea as in June, 1856.
