Judging by the returns of sickness I have received, cases both of scarlatina
and small-pox appear to have been less frequent. There were only 9 cases of
scarlet fever recorded by the District Medical Officers and the two Dispensaries.
Nineteen cases of Small-pox were recorded by the former and only one by the
latter. The weekly cases were 4, 5, 6, 5. Four of these cases occurred at
2, Baldwin's Cottages,—some miserable buildings only erected, I believe, to
serve a temporary purpose, but which still continue in occupation,—and four
in several parts of Elder Walk, where the disease is spreading among the
unprotected. On visiting one of the Schools in Elder Walk I found six
children absent from this cause.
EDWARD BALLARD, M.D.,
Medical Officer of Health.
