REPORT OF WORK OF VOLUNTARY CENTRES.
A Tabic is given summarising very briefly the work of the Welfare Centres
for the year ending March 21st, 1920.
As regards the North Centre, the Committee, with the aid of the
Ministry purchased the premises 6, 7, 8 and 9, Manor Gardens. A Quartz lamp
for local artificial sunlight treatment was presented to the Centre by Professor
Leonard Hobhouse. This forms an additional lamp, for, as mentioned in a
previous report, this Centre already possesses an Eidinow Carbon Arc Lamp. As
regards the Light Clinic, whenever the weather is suitable children are exposed to
the rays of the real sun instead of those of the lamp and their bodies become
much browner. The out-of-door treatment, however, has been possible on so few
days that no comparison has been feasible in respect of the two treatments. The
artificial variety is invaluable in the long periods of sunless days. It is reported
that the light treatment has had benefcial effect on the appetites of the children.
Their vitality and their contentedness have been improved and, with few exceptions,
practically all the children have responded equally well.
In addition to the activities during " Health Week," lectures were given
during the year under the auspices of the Fathers', Mothers' and Parent's
Committees.
South Centre. — During the year mentioned, the South Centre purchased
a house to be used as a Convalescent cottage for six mothers w ith young babies.
This Centre reports that the knowledge of the value of ante-natal work is spreading
and the mothers are showing an increasing desire to be treated and cared for
during this time. A few cases from this Centre have been sent for artificial light
treatment through the good offices of the Almeric Paget Clinic in Britannia Row.
East Centre.— Just towards the close of the Centre year this Centre
moved into their new premises at 10, Drayton Park. Like the South Centre,
cases are sent for artificial sunlight treatment to the Almeric Paget Corps.
West Centre. — This Centre sustained a great loss in the untoward death
of the founder and physician-in-charge, Dr. Marion Vaughan. During the Centre
year, the Alpine Arc Lamp, the gift of the National Sunday League, was installed
at this Centre, and we hope to report upon this further when it has been in use a
little longer.
"HEALTH AND BABY WEEK."
The Centres, as I have stated, participated actively in the Islington "Health
and Baby Week," which opened in Islington on the 1st October, 1925, the Mayor
presiding at a Lantern Lecture "School and the Children" by Miss Henrietta
Adler, J.P. The following is the official programme of the Illustrated Lectures
and Exhibits from Welfare Centres, etc., held in the Town Hall, Upper Street, N.
Friday, 2nd October, 1925.
