DEATHS.
The deaths numbered 1,1G0, while the death-rate was equal to 12.26 per 1,000
of the population, or 0.02 lower than that of the preceding year (12.28), and was
2.3 less than the average of the previous 10 years.
When compared with the mortality of the country, the death-rate is also
satisfactory, for it is found that, while the mortality rate in Islington was 12.3
per 1,000, that of England and Wales was 12.2. There is, however, a considerable difference in the distribution of the ages and sexes in the two populations,
which of course affects the death-rate, and a correction must be made before an
accurate comparison can be arrived at, and then it is found that the standardized
death-rate of the Borough becomes 11.5, whilst that of England and Wales is 10.7,
so that the local mortality rate is 0.8 above that of the country.
When it is recollected that Islington has a large population living under
crowded conditions that do not occur in the country as a whole, the death-rate
may be considered very creditable.
