ADULTERATION OF FOOD AND DRUGS.
During- the year the analysis of samples of food and drugs was performed
by our Analyst, Mr. Ernest A. Pinchin, B.Sc., who examined 1,373 samples submitted
to him by the Food and Drugs Inspector. Of the total articles analysed
1,231 were found to be genuine, whilst 142, or 10.3 per cent., were adulterated.

The percentage of adulteration in the four quarters of the year was as follows:

Prosecutions. — Sixty-nine summonses were issued under the "Sale of
Food and Drugs Acts," and 63 of these were successfully prosecuted. The total
amount of penalties and costs received was £205 10s. Od. Eleven other cases
were heard under the Public Health (Milk and Cream) Regulations, resulting in
the defendants being fined £4 8s. 6d., with £15 9s. Od. costs.
