Food—Inspection of.—Inspector Wilkinson reports that during the year
he has paid 730 visits to the 13 Slaughter Houses now on the register, including
one Horse Slaughter House, and that he has ascertained that 11,788 animals were
killed therein, namely, 568 oxen and cows, 52 calves, 6,000 sheep and lambs, 14
pigs and 5,154 horses for human consumption, the whole of which were exported.
These were apparently of good quality and free from disease, but in 44 cases meat
and organs found to be diseased were destroyed (vide table on page 55).

The total amount of unsound or diseased meat, fish, fruit, and other food
destroyed was 4 tons 9 cwts. 0 qrs. 10 lbs. The diseases which affected animal
food are set out in detail on page 55.
Shops, etc , Inspection of.-The total 662 shops and places where foodstuffs
are sold may be approximated for the year as follows:
Butchers', provision dealers', etc., shops, 240; meat, provisions, rabbits,
tinned foods, etc., stalls, 19; food preparation establishments, 23; fish shops, 103;
fish stalls, 12; fruit shops, 200; and about 65 fruit, etc., stalls and barrows. To
these 19,826 visits were paid apportioned as follows:
