7th April, 1909.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Dear Sir,—In compliance with your instructions, I have pleasure in submitting for
your consideration the following brief report an summary of the work carried out by me
during the latter part of the year 1908.
340 samples in all were qualitatively examined, of which number 245 seemed to be
genuine, while 28 were protected by a declaration on the wrapper, and 47 appeared to be
adulterated.
Of the latter, 36 duplicate samples were purchased, and submitted to the Public
Anallyst in the usual wav. when he reported against 33 for prosecution. In the case of 11
samples, the purchase was not proceeded with because the vendors made a declaration as to
the exact nature of the article, although when purchases were made on previous occasions,
no similar announcements were forthcoming.
Legal proceedings followed, and were successful in every instance, the total amount
of fines and costs being £71 6s. 9d.
