Butcher Shops and Places where Food is sold.—The Inspector
also made 13,148 visits to these places, during which various food stuffs as set
out in Table B of his report, were seized or surrendered.

Cowhouses.—There are now only 7 cowhouses in the borough. They have gradually grown fewer in number, as may be seen from the following figures:—

Apparently it pays dairymen better to purchase the milk from farmers or
from wholesale milk dealers than to keep cows in the borough. At all events,
whatever be the cause, the number of cows now kept is very small. Indeed,
although the seven cowsheds are licensed for 172 animals, they have housed,
on an average, not more than 50. As the Inspector well points out, this is a
matter for regret, because far greater precautions are taken against the contamination
of milk in them than in most country districts, and also because
the animals are better housed, while they are also better groomed.
The cowsheds were visited on 81 occasions. Only once had the Inspector
to complain of the state of the cows.
When the Medical Officer of Health made his annual visit to the cowsheds
he was able to report to the Public Health Committee on October 2Gth that
they were all in a very good condition.
