To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,—Herewith I beg to submit to you a report of the work done during the year
1908, in reference to restaurant kitchens and outworkers' premises.

During that period 3,788 calls and inspections have been made as follows: —

387 intimation notices were served to cover 715 defects, including those on the homeworkers'
premises.
Twelve statutory and 31 intimation Courtesy notices were forwarded; 212 letters to
employers failing to send lists of outworkers; 254 workroom cards were delivered, specifying
cubic space of workroom; 296 cards to homeworkers, containing instructions in case of infectious
disease occurring on premises where work is done.
Restaurant Kitchens.—The total number registered at the end of the year 1908 was
685 kitchens, with 939 workrooms.
At the beginning of the year there were 452 kitchens, with 593 workrooms. During
the period under report 17 of these premises were closed, and 250 kitchens, with 346 workrooms
added to the register.
