Outworkers.—There were 1,831 outworkers' premises on the register,
as compared with 1,989 in the preceding year. On the list received from
employers in Islington, 4,444 were entered, in addition to which 2,715 were
received from other Councils. From the local lists 1,431 addresses were forwarded
to other Councils.
Restaurants and Kitchens where Food is prepared.—
685 restaurant kitchens and places where food is prepared, containing 939
rooms, are on the register, as compared with 452, containing 593 rooms, in the
receding year. It will thus be seen that very considerable additions (250) have
been made to the register while only 17 were removed from it.
It is very satisfactory to be able to say that a great improvement is evidenced
in these places and that, although many of the proprietors resent interference
yet on the whole, they have fallen in with the ideas of the Inspector, and
made the necessary alterations or improvements.
Looking back, one cannot but wonder how it came about that not only here
but throughout the country, these kitchens, until quite recently, had never
received adequate supervision from the local authorities.
Workshops notified to H.M. Inspector.—Under the provisions of
Section 133 of the Factory and Workshop Act, it is required that the Medical
Officer of Health, when he becomes aware that any woman, young child or
person is employed in a workshop, shall forthwith send notice to H.M. Inspector
of Factories. 159 workshops were reported during the year in accordance
with this section.
