and eating houses, or of places where food is prepared, and 1,831 outworkers'
premises.

Sanitation.—1,942 sanitary defects were discovered ,of which 719 related
to want of cleanliness, 12 to want of ventilation, 8 to overcrowding, 72 to
insnfficient, or want of, drainage to the floors, and 520 to other nuisances. In
38 instances dustbins were wanting, in 12 the w.c. accommodation was insufficient,
in 375 it was foul, in 17G was unsuitable or defective, and in 10 the
sexes had not been provided with separate accommodation.
Of these sanitary defects, 1,773 had been remedied at the close of the
year. In addition to these, nuisances were found in 141 instances in the
homes of outworkers, while in 38 infectious diseases were reported.
As showing the volume of work that has been done in factories, workshops,
and workplaces since 1896, it may be said that 13,333 more or less serious
nuisances, in addition to very many of minor importance, have been discovered
and remedied.
