It has usually been most fatal in the first and fourth quarters of the year,
in other words, in the periods of low temperatures Thus it is found that on an
average there have been 42 deaths during the years 1898-1907 in the first
quarters, 14 in the second, 4 in the third and 17 in the fourth. Last year,
however, the greatest number of deaths occurred in the first quarter, viz., 52,
while in the fourth quarter they numbered only 6 as against 20 in the second
quarter.
From the figures given in the table which immediately follows, it is
seen that whereas the deaths in the first quarter were 10 above the average,
those in the fourth quarter were 11 below it.
It is interesting to note that the chief complication of influenza noticed
during the year was pneumonia, which was registered as a secondary cause in
35, or 44 per cent, of the cases, while bronchitis was the secondary factor in
19, or 24 per cent.
Heart disease was a secondary cause in 11, or 14 per cent, of the deaths.
