So that the decrease in recent years may be more readily appreciated, the
deaths since 1901 have been put on a common basis. Thus if the 628 deaths in
that year are taken as 100, and the deaths in twelve succeeding years are
expressed in terms of 100, the relative deaths are as follows: —

1902—07 1907—69 1912—47
1903—75 1908—57 1913—51
1904—96 1909—67 —
1905—84 1910—68 Average—77
Thus the deaths in 1913 were 49 per cent, fewer than in 1901, and 26 per
cent. below the average of the thirteen years 1901-13.
The mortality in these years has been above the average on six occasions
and below it on seven, six of which have been in the last eight years. The
full figures for each year since 1885 are given in Table XXX.
