Shops,, etc., Inspection of.—The number of shops, etc., where foodstuffs are sold varies
somewhat from time to time, but may be approximated for the year as follows:—
Butchers' Provision Dealers, etc., 237, Meat and Rabbit stalls 5, Sausage factories
and l'ood-preserving works 9, Fish shops 105, Fish stalls 6, Fruit shops 212, and about 20
Fruit stalls. To these a total of 12,558 visits were recorded, apportioned as under,, viz.:—
Butchers, Provision Dealers, etc., Shops 6,230 visits.
Sausage Factories, etc. 197 ,,
Butcher and Provision Stalls 417 „
Fish Shops 1,658 „
„ Stalls 416 ,,
Fruit Shops 2,668 ,,
,, Stalls 972 „
Total 12,558 visits.
The quality and condition of foodstuffs in general coming under those observations
were on the whole again very satisfactory, a detailed list of unsound foods dealt with, which
were in nearly every case, voluntarily submitted for inspection, and ultimately surrendered
for destruction, will be found in the succeeding table "b."
