Sanitary Improvements.—During the year 85 notices have been served for the
abatement of nuisances, 192 workshops have been cleansed and limewhited, 28 W.C.'s have
been provided (12 for males and 16 for females) at various factories and workshops; 192
W.C.'s, which were in a foul condition, have been cleansed; 54 W.C.'s, which were defective,
have been amended; 17 water supplies have been provided; also 141 other improvements
were carried out under my supervision; 20 workroom cards were distributed., showing
the cubic capacity and the number of employees allowed in each workroom. Five drains
which were found to be stopped or in a defective condition, were transferred to the various
district inspectors.
Bakehouses.—During the year 460 inspections were made to the bakehouses, besides
a number of other calls to same, to see if they were kept clean, and free from any clothes
being dried or aired in them, but I am pleased to state, they were kept in a very satisfactory
condition, and the occupiers generally do their utmost to meet our requirements, and give
as little trouble as possible. At the end of the year there were 93 bakehouses in use above
ground,94 below ground, and 50 not in use, making a total of 237, a decrease of 4 from the
previous year.
I have notified through you to H.M. Inspector of Factories the names and addresses
of 49 factories and workshops in the Borough, where young persons under the age of 18
years, were employed, and where the abstract of the Factory Act was not affixed, also 4 new
factories have been reported in accordance with the Home Office Memorandum of March,
1912.
During the year 71 workshops have been added to the Register, whilst 57 have been
removed, so that at the present time there are 910 workshops, containing 1,338 workrooms,
and 69 outworkers' premises now on the register. I may here state that there is a net
increase of 14 workshops, to that of the preceding year.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
GEORGE WEST.
Sanitary Inspector of Workshops, etc.
