DISINFECTION.
This work grows in importance year by year, for not only are rooms, in
which the notifiable infectious diseases have occurred, as well as the infected
bedding disinfected, but recently it has become necessary to disinfect
the rooms in which patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis have lived;
while in addition the largely increased number of rooms in a verminous state
w hich have come under notice have had to be dealt with.
Disinfection of Rooms.—2,84-5 rooms were disinfected, as contrasted
with 2,377 in 1912. For this purpose formaldehyde, either in a gaseous form
or in solution, is usually employed, although it is sometimes augmented by
sulphur dioxide, when it is necessary to kill vermin, for which purpose it has
been found most effective.
The Cleansing and Spraying of Rooms.-As many as 1,439 rooms,
as contrasted with 1,272 in 1912, were cleansed and sprayed.
