REPORT
OF THE
Medical Officer of Health
FOR THE YEAR 1913.
POPULATION OF THE BOROUGH, THE SUB-REGISTRATION
DISTRICTS THEIR AREAS AND DENSITIES.
Population.—The number of people living in any sanitary area is the
factor most required for correctly gauging the measure of its health,
and for comparing it with other areas; for on it are calculated the
death-rates by which these comparisons are made. It is, therefore, of the
utmost consequence that the enumerated or the estimated populations should
be accurate.
Unfortunately in the case of Islington considerable doubt has crept in as
to its accuracy since the Census of 1911. That the enumeration showed a
decrease then was not altogether unexpected by the Medical Officer of Health,
who in common with others interested in the question, had noticed that the
number of empty houses had increased towards the close of the intercensal
period. No one was, therefore, surprised when the census of 1911 showed a
decrease of 7,568 persons.
Population in 1901 334,991
Population in 1911 327,423
Decrease 7,568
