DIPHTHERIA.
Thirty-eight deaths were registered, as contrasted with an average of 100
during the years 1885-1911, and with an average in the preceding 10 years
of 45. These deaths were equal to an annual death-rate of 012 per 1,000
inhabitants. The largest number of deaths occurred in Highbury, where 14
were registered, while the death-rate there was almost double that of any other
sub-district.
The mortality from Diphtheria in the Borough is somewhat below
that experienced in 1911, when the deaths registered numbered 53. Compared
with past years there was a decided decrease in the number of deaths that
occur annually, for if the history of the disease be studied, it will be found that
the records now only run into tens, whereas from 1891 to 1900 they amounted
to hundreds.
Thus from 1891-1895 the average number of deaths registered was 168,
1896-1900, 136; 1901-1905, 69. This number further fell to 40 in 1906-1910.
Its history so far as the records in Islington show is given in the following
statement, which gives the number of deaths in each quinquennial period, as
well as the average number for each year in those periods.
