viii.
The work of the staff of the Public Health Department continues to
increase owing to the tendency of modern legislation to place new duties and
responsibilities on sanitary authorities; and, generally, it may be stated that
it has been performed satisfactorily with the exception of those which deal
with newly born infants and tuberculous persons, for which work female
Inspectors, who alone are suitable and qualified to undertake such work, are
required. I have no doubt, however, that when this matter comes before
you again that you will give it that favourable consideration which it deserves.
I cannot conclude without thanking the members of the Council—
particularly those who constitute the Public Health Committee, and
especially their Chairman, Councillor Harwood—for the great courtesy they
have at all times shown to me, and for the willing assistance they have
invariably afforded me in the discharge of the, at times, very onerous duties
which must of necessity devolve on anyone who holds the responsible
position of Medical Officer of Health for a great borough like Islington.
I am,
Your faithful servant,
Medical Officer of Health.
