Sanitary Improvements.—During the year 99 notices have been served for the abatement
of nuisances, 222 workshops have been cleansed and lime-whited, 42 w.c's. have been
provided (30 for males and 12 for females) at various workshops, 195 w.c's. which were in
a foul condition have been cleansed, 106 w.c's. which were defective have been amended, 16
water supplies have been provided, also 97 other improvements were carried out under my
supervision; 41 workroom cards were distributed showing the cubic capacity and the number
of employees allowed in each workroom. One drain which was found to be in a defective
condition was transferred to the District Inspector.
Bakehouses.—During the year 536 inspections have been made to bakehouses, besides
a number of other calls to same. I am pleased to say that the occupiers generally do their
utmost to give as little trouble as possible in keeping them in a cleanly condition. At the
end of the year there were 99 bakehouses in use above ground, 96 below ground, and 46 not
in use, making a total of 241.
I have notified through you to H.M. Inspector of Factories the names and addresses
of 63 factories and workshops in the Borough where young persons under the age of 18 years
were employed, and where the abstract of the Factory Act was not affixed. Also 4 new
factories have been reported in accordance with the Home Office Memorandum of March, 1912.
Register.—During the year 127 workshops have been added to the Register, whilst
163 have been removed, so that at the present time there are 896 workshops, containing 1,311
workrooms, and 80 outworkers' premises now on the register,
