to want of cleanliness, 33 to want of ventilation, 14 to overcrowding, 35 to
insufficient, or want of, drainage to the floors, and 187 to other nuisances. In

in 14 the sexes had not been provided with separate accommodation, while in

Of these sanitary defects, 1,415 had been remedied at the close of the
year. In addition to these, nuisances were found in 50 instances in the homes
of outworkers, from which 24 cases of infectious diseases had been reported.
It is interesting to note that since 1896 as many as 18,047 nuisances which
were of a more oi less serious character have been dealt with in the factories,
workshops and workplaces of the Borough by the Inspectors. There were of
course innumerable nuisances of minor importance which were discovered
and remedied.
Some of these dealt with are to be seen in the following Table,
which gives particulars for each year since 1896.
