Puerperal Septic Diseases.—Under this heading are included
Puerperal Pyaemia, Septicaemia, Septic Intoxication, and Puerperal Fever (socalled).
This formidable array of ailments only caused two deaths between
them, which is seven below the corrected average. They were in proportion
of 0.24 to every 1,000 births, as contrasted with 1.06 in the preceding 10 years.
It is exceedingly satisfactory to find that these diseases of child-birth show a
diminution, and it is sincerely to be hoped that the improvement will continue,
because deaths from them are certainly the saddest of all deaths; for
surely there can be nothing more pitiable than a newly-born infant child
deprived of the care and nurture of its mother.

The returns for the last eleven years are given below:—
