REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1910
To the Worshipful the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Islington
Gentlemen,
I have pleasure herewith in presenting to you my report on the health and
sanitary condition of your Borough during 1910
Its issue has been somewhat delayed owing to the fact that the recent
Census showed that the population had been over-estimated by 25,933 When
these figures were published the report had been prepared Indeed, a considerable
portion of it had been in the printer's hands for some time I felt,
however, that its issue would be a mistake, because not a single mortality rate,
based, of course, on erroneous figures, relating to the year under consideration,
or to any year between 1901 and 1909, would have been correct The report
was, therefore, revised, and every statistic corrected, so that the actual state of
health of the large district over which you preside might be shown
It has been suggested that the good health of the Borough had been too
highly lauded of late, because the population had been largely over-estimated,
and that when the death-rates were re-calculated on the revised population,
they would be found to be not nearly so satisfactory
In these circumstances, I am glad to be able to report that the death-rate
for 1910, based on the revised population, was the lowest on record, which may be
seen on reference to Table H in the Appendix I, therefore, heartily
congratulate the Borough on its good health
