for the Inspector to look after, but during the. last few years these were reduced
to 10 districts, so that each district contained 33,000 persons, so that their tally
of work necessarily shows a decrease, although, if each Inspector's work be
taken, in each instance there is an increase. It has been impossible to carry
out house-to-house inspection.
Synopsis of the Inspectors' Work.— The following statement gives a brief synopsis of the district inspector's work in 1917:—

Notices Served.—There were 1,892 intimation notices served by the
inspectors with respect to nuisances, of which 1,939 were delivered personally,
and 187 by post. In 234 instances it became necessary, as the intimations
had not been attended to, to report the nuisances to the Public Health Committee,
who ordered statutory notices to be served.
Verminous Premises—Bedding and Clothing.—17 premises were
found to be in a verminous condition, and these were cleansed by the owners
or occupiers upon receiving the Inspectors' intimations. In 17 instances it
was necessary to remove the bedding and clothing to the Disinfecting Station
for purification or destruction.
Smoke Nuisances.—Black smoke was observed to be issuing from the
chimneys of the undermentioned premises, and consequently notices were served
on the owners of the following businesses requiring the abatement of the
nuisance:—
121, Holloway Road.
Roylance's Laundry, Barnsbury Park.
Western's Laundry, Drayton Park.
Public Baths, Tibberton Square, Essex Road.
