FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ADMINISTRATION.
In accordance with the Factory and Workshops Act, the Medical Officer
of Health, herewith, submits his annual report on the work carried out by the
Workshops' Inspectors during the year 1917.

Inspections and Visits. —The inspections and visits made by the

Inspectors were as under:—

Notices served.—In consequence of the 1,098 sanitary defects discovered
as the result of the above-mentioned inspections, 160 intimations and 12statutory
notices were served. Of these notices 48 were served on the owners of factories,
86 on the owners of workshops, 35 on the owners of restaurant kitchens, and 3
on the owners of Outworkers' premises. In addition to these nuisances, 59
were discovered on Outworkers' premises, necessitating the service of 21
notices.
Registers.—There were 1,896 workshops on the Register, as contrasted with
1,949 in 1916, while the total number of workrooms was 2,624 as contrasted
with 2,699 in the previous year. 154 workshops were added to the Register
while 207 were removed from it.
