Other Tubercular Diseases.—In addition to the deaths from Phthisis
there were 111 from other tubercular diseases, namely:—
Tabes Mesenterica 22 deaths.
Tubercular Meningitis 65 „
General Tuberculosis 13 ,,
Other forms of Tuberculosis 11 „
These brought up the total number of deaths from tubercular diseases to
596, which are equal to an annual death-rate of 2'01 per 1,000 of the civil
population.

DEATHS FROM THE DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.
These diseases, which include Chrome and Acute Bronchitis, Pneumonia,
Pleurisy and Asthma, caused 887 deaths, or 119 less than in 1916. They
were equal to a death-rate of 2'99 per 1,000 of the civil population, and
represented 19-3 per cent, of the total deaths registered in the borough.
Acute Bronchitis.—There were 132 deaths as compared with 146 in the
previous year. 61 occurred among males, and 71 among females. 33 deaths
of infants under 12 months were registered.
Chronic Bronchitis—Three hundred and ten deaths were ascribed
to it, 164 being males and 146 females. This return is 58 below that for 1916t
Pneumonia (All forms).— Three hundred and ninety-five deaths were
registered, of which 230 were males and 165 females. They are 50 above
the number who died in 1916. It was very fatal to infants under a year old,
among whom it caused 92 deaths, while between the ages of 1 and 5 years
89 died from it. Above 5 years of age the deaths numbered 214,
