SEPTIC DISEASES.
Erysipelas and Puerperal Septicæmia are the principal diseases of this class.
Erysipelas. 9 deaths were returned from this disease, or 4 more than in the year
1921 and 1 below the average of the preceding ten years 1912-21.
Puerperal Diseases. —These comprise Puerperal Pyæmia, Septicæmia, Septic
Intoxication and Puerperal Fever, and they caused 5 deaths, which is 7 below the return
1521, and 3 less than the average of the ten years 1912-21.
CANCER.
Cancer.—There were 421 deaths from this malignant disease during the year compared
with 475 in 1921, and with an average of 410 in the previous decennium. The deaths
represent a death-rate of 126 per 1,000 of the civil population and is 0 03 above the average
rate (1.29) of the last ten years; 197 deaths occurred among males and 224 among females.

TUBERCULOSIS.
Tuberculosis caused 433 deaths, which were 100 below the average of the last
decennium, but were 23 above the number registered in 1921. The death-rate resulting
from them was equal to 1.30 per 1,000 of the civil population, and represented 9.4 per
cent. of the deaths from all causes during the year (vide p. 66).
Tuberculosis of the Respiratory System (Phthisis is Pulmonary
Tuberculosis), caused 378 deaths, as contrasted with the decennial average of 435, while
the death-rate was 1.13 per 1,000 of the civil population, as against the decennial rate
