ASSISTANT MEDICAL OFFICER'S REPORT ON THE MATERNITY AND
CHILD WELFARE SCHEME. YEAR ENDING 1922.
The Scheme has been re-arranged so as to bring it, as far as possible, into accordance
with the Regulations laid down in the Maternity and Child Welfare Act, 1918, and the
Maternity and Child Welfare Circulars issued by the Ministry of Health.
Work in the Metropolitan Borough of Islington under this Scheme is Municipal and
Voluntary.
The Municipal part of the Scheme may roughly be divided into three headings:
1. Home visitation of mothers and children up to 5 years of age.
2. Co-ordination and co-operation with voluntary and other agencies to whom grants
are made by the Council. These include the Islington (Voluntary) Welfare Centres
(4), Day Nurseries (3), North London Nursing Association, Royal Free Hospital
and City of London Maternity Hospital (ante-natal and lying-in patients in
connection with applicants for maternity grants), Invalid Children's Aid Association,
omen's League of Service for Motherhood, and Field Lane Institution.
Co-operation is carried out as far as possible with the Charity Organisation Society,
