REPORT OX THE MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE WORK.
In March the Council appointed an Assistant to the Medical Officer of Health (the
position, occupied by the late Mr. Leggatt, of Superintendent of the department and Chief
Sanitary Inspector, not being refilled). This has enabled the work of reorganising the
health visitation in the Borough to be carried out, and also the co-relation of this work
with that of the Voluntary Centres to be more effectively undertaken.
Dr. Beatrice Garvie, in the Maternity and Child Welfare work, has had a task of
no inconsiderable difficulty, having had the supervising and arranging to avoid the
overlapping with the voluntary work, and at the same time the directing of the Council's
Health Visitors to the other poor or necessitous cases in the borough—supervision work
which was long overdue. I need hardly say that the Assistant Medical Officer has
accomplished this admirably, and we now possess records of the cases visited and a
system which has received the approval of the Ministry of Health Inspector.
In October an effort was made to arouse public interest in the subject of maternity
and child welfare by demonstrations, lectures, and exhibits, during Health Week. The
title chosen to describe the arrangements was "Islington Health and Baby Week." This
was an extension of what had been done the previous year, when the Medical Officer of
Health had given one of the series of Library Lectures on a health subject.
