naturally expccts medicines to be measured with a degree of accuracy far superior to the
ordinary weighings of say, for example, groceries, etc.
In December a commencement was made in taking prescription samples, and from
four dispensed, two were taken to Court, the one being deficient (1T2 per cent.) in bromide
of potash, and (5 2 per cent.) in the spirit of sal volatile. The other, a simple solution of
sodium salicylate was 10 8 per cent, deficient.
In Court the Analyst who appeared on behalf of the defendant in the first mentioned
case, stated that the stock solution of bromide had in error been made up by avoidupois
weight instead of apothecaries. The Magistrate remarked that a firm with many branch
shops could by this make a considerable gain in the course of a year.
As stated, it was towards the close of the year that these special samples began to
be taken ; therefore necessarily the complete report can only be adequately dealt with
in the review of the work for 1923.
