Bill being introduced into Parliament for the amendment of the Public Health Acts."
Further information will be found page 51. (c) Preservatives in Food. The Medical
Officer of Health, in reporting to the Committee on preservatives in food (page 57), suggested
that representations should be made to the Ministry of Health for definite inquiry under
the following heads: (1) whether certain preservatives are harmless: (2) the proposed
standards as regards the amount, if any, to be permitted; (3) the class of food in which such
preservatives, if so found necessary, may be used (as at present some manufacturers use such,
while others produce a satisfactory preparation without); id) Unsound Food.—The risk
involved of unsound food being sold, through the wholesaler selling fruit, unexamined and
unsorted was considered by the Public Health Committee, and a Conference met at Islington
at which representatives attended from Metropolitan Boroughs. Snbsequcntlv a Deputation
was received by the Ministry on the matter (page 50). (e) Dispensing of Prescriptions.Just
towards the end of the year, a commencement was made b\ taking samples under the
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts to test the accuracy of the dispensing of medicine-- in the
Borough (page 60).

POPULATION.
The population of the Borough in 1922, estimated by the Registrar-General, is 333,900
persons, of whom 156,280 were males and 177,620 females. These figures show a total
increase of 900 persons as compared with those of the preceding year.
The following tables give full information respecting the sex, age and distribution of
the population of the several sub-registration districts and wards, together with particulars
of their areas and densities, also inhabited houses, private families, and conditions of
occupation, which have been abstracted from the Census returns recently issued.
