traps are at the lowest point of the drain, nearest to the sewer, but within
the curtilage of the premises, they are not infrequently 8, 10, or 12 feet
deep. In such cases the difficulties and expense of clearing them was
very great, and, hence, the owner finds out to his sorrow that after all the
first cost of the chamber is the least.
I have seen a great deal of this annoyance, and I would therefore
prefer that the drain should be soundly laid, in iron pipes if possible,
with the ventilation pipe carried to the highest point of the roof, and the
intercepting trap abolished. I know of thousands of houses thus drained,
and I have not known any ill results.
