Average readings from apparatus sited at Monck Street, and Churchill
Gardens.
By means of this apparatus a measured volume of air is drawn through
a filter paper which removes solid matter from it. The stain therebyproduced
is compared with a standard, from which the amount of pollution
is calculated.

Sequential Smoke Sampling Apparatus
As previously reported, the City Council is co-operating in the
investigation being carried out by the Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research into the relation between atmospheric pollution and
respiratory diseases. During 1962, in order to provide the information
required, the Council purchased and installed, at a cost of approximately
£55, a sequential smoke sampling apparatus which examines and records
at regular intervals the solid pollution in a measured quantity of air.
The machine was put into use on a total of 36 days in 1964 during
periods of fog or weather showing a fog tendency, as follows:—
