Slum Clearance
Clearance Areas
In pursuance of the City Council's slum clearance programme 1961-65,
I made representations during 1964 for dealing with the following
premises:—
(i) one building comprising 19 dwellings, viz.:—St. Anne's
Buildings, St. Anne's Court, W.1 (0-056 acre);
(ii) seven houses, viz.:—Nos. 1 to 7 (consecutive and inclusive),
St. Anne's Court, W.1 (0-092 acre); and
(iii) six houses, viz.:—Nos. 1 to 6 (consecutive and inclusive),
Richmond Buildings, W.1 (0.137 acre).
The City Council at its meeting on 21st May, 1964, passed a resolution
declaring the three areas to be clearance areas, and Members were informed
that a further report would be submitted dealing with the steps to be
taken to secure the demolition of the buildings.
The Housing Act, 1957, provides that an order authorising the compulsory
purchase of land comprised in a clearance area shall be submitted
to the Minister of Housing and Local Government within six months after
the date of the resolution declaring the area to be a clearance area. In
the case of the areas referred to above, however, and at the City Council's
request, the Minister authorised an extension of the statutory period by
six months expiring 20th May, 1965.
Housing Acts, 1961 and 1964- Houses in Multiple Occupation
Owing to the continued shortage of public health inspectors, only a
small amount of progress could be made during 1964 in connection with
the survey of houses in multiple occupation, and the implementation of
the provisions of the Housing Acts, 1961 and 1964.
Common Lodging Houses
There are two common lodging houses for men in the City, licensed
by the City Council under the Public Health (London) Act, 1936.
These common lodging houses have accommodation for 716 and 565
men lodgers respectively.
Nine visits were made by the public health inspectors to the lodging
houses during the year.
