Welfare of Old Persons
During 1964 the Westminster Old People's Welfare Association
continued its activities in the City for the general welfare of old people.
These activities included the organisation of fourteen Darby and Joan
Clubs in various parts of Westminster; a chiropody service; holidays at
seaside resorts and summer outings; Christmas parties and the distribution
of gift parcels at Christmas time; special outings for handicapped old
people and a Day Club for handicapped elderly persons at Sherborne
House at which luncheons cooked on the premises are served daily.
The City Council makes an annual grant to the funds of the Association
under powers contained in the National Assistance Act, 1948.
Throughout the year the Westminster Division of the British Red
Cross Society continued the service established in Westminster in 1946
for the delivery of hot midday meals to the homes of old people who are
themselves unable to prepare meals at home. The City Council makes
an annual grant to the Society for this purpose and also provides the
necessary transport. The Society also operates a luncheon club for the
elderly on two days per week in accommodation provided by the City
Council in Monck Street.
The invaluable service rendered to old people in Westminster by the
Old People's Welfare Association and the local Division of the British
Red Cross Society is much appreciated by all concerned.
The following table shows the total number of meals supplied by all the
above sources to elderly persons in Westminster during 1964, with
