B.—Informal action in respect of parts of buildings unfit for
human habitation.
(1) Number of instances of informal action initiated to secure
requirements of the Housing Acts and Regulations made
thereunder—
(a) in respect of underground rooms 36
(b) in respect of other parts of buildings 13
In one instance the informal action procedure was
adopted at the suggestion of the Medical Officer of
Health, and in 48 cases on the initiative of owners.

Slum Clearance
Programme for 1956-1960—Progress
The current slum clearance programme, submitted jointly by the
London County Council and the Westminster City Council in pursuance
of the Housing Repairs and Rents Act, 1954 (Section 1), and approved
by the Minister of Housing and Local Government, provides for the
demolition of 121 houses which were considered to be unfit for human
habitation. Progress is as follows:—
Houses
1. As a result of statutory action by Council—
(a) Houses demolished 50
(b) Houses subject to orders prohibiting their use for
any purpose other than a purpose approved by
the Council 2
2. Houses included in compulsory purchase order submitted
by Council for confirmation and Minister's
decision awaited before demolition can proceed 13*
3. Houses rendered fit for human habitation by owners
since date of preliminary survey 3
Total 68
(Note.—* As a result of further inspections, another four
houses not shown in this Table were included in the order as unfit
for human habitation, although they were not in the programme
as approved by the Council.)
