The opportunity has been taken this year of including in the report a
map (facing page 65) showing parts of the City where Smoke Control Orders
are already in force, and the Council's proposals for the future. Good
progress has already been made and it is hoped that the whole of Westminster
will be smokeless by the autumn of 1965.
To enter a new appointment and take over the administration of a
department can be a difficult task. For me, it has been made easy by
the willing help I have received not only from my colleagues in the service
of the Council, but also from those working in general practice, hospitals
and voluntary organisations. My thanks are especially due to the staff
of the Public Health Department for their conscientious and loyal support.
To you Mr. Mayor, to the Chairman and members of the Public Health
Committee and to the members of the Council generally, may I express
my gratitude for the kindness and consideration shown to me during
these early months of my appointment.
June, 1961.
J. H. Briscoe-Smith,
Medical Officer of Health.
