that the whole of the City's refuse is conveyed into barges in Grosvenor Dock with
a minimum of noise and dust. In accordance with the conditions of contract, the
refuse is conveyed in steel barges with wooden hatches completely covered with
tarpaulins to the Contractor's dump at Pitsea, Essex, where it is deposited in accordance
with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, the requirements of the
Essex County Council and the local authority concerned. Frequent visits to the
dump are made by an officer of the Department and it is also visited periodically by
the Committee.
Civil Defence Duties.—The employees of the Department have been trained in
decontamination work and special decontamination facilities are being provided at
the Central Depot and two other Depots."

Public Sanitary Conveniences.—These are under the control of the
City Engineer. There are 42 public conveniences in the City, 23 for
men and 19 for women. Of these, 7 for men and 4 for women are open
both day and night. Free conveniences for both sexes are provided at
all establishments, except those at Rochester Row and Victoria Embankment
by Westminster Bridge. In addition, there are 27 public urinals
for men
Medical Inspection of Aliens.
The Medical Inspection of Aliens arriving at Victoria Station by the
through sleeping car service from Paris, was carried out daily throughout
the year, with the exception of a few days on which the boat service
was cancelled owing to unfavourable weather conditions, or owing to
delay in arrival of the boats, passengers were inspected at Dover instead
of at Victoria. A total of 9,934 passengers from 358 boats were dealt
with during the year by the assistant medical inspectors appointed by
the Council for this purpose.
