at the hospital to make sure that they shall not carry infection. After
a long illness in hospital, in which everything that could be possibly done
to save the life of the patient was tried without success, the patient
died.
An occasional death of this kind, unfortunately, appears to be
inevitable, even with the very best services, while the others cannot be
prevented by any provision of services. These abortion cases reveal
with alarming directness the desperate efforts of some poor women to
free themselves from pregnancy. There may be many instances where
such attempts are successful; but there are no means of assessing the
number. Only the unfortunate few whose fate brings them to the
light of public inquest can be numbered. They should not be included
under the term "Maternal Mortality" for they bear no relationship to
childbed.
Infant Clinics.—These are held at the following centres at the times
mentioned:—
Council's Centres—
Ebury Bridge—2p.m. Wednesday. 2p.m. Friday.
Bessborough Street—2p.m. Tuesday and 2p.m. Thursday.
Marshall Street—2p.m. Wednesday.
Westminster Health Society—
Marsham Street—2p.m. Tuesday. 2p.m. Friday.
Toddlers' Clinic—1st Tuesday each month at 10a.m.
2nd Tuesday each month at 2p.m.
Clinics are also held at the Infants' Hospital, Vincent Square and
Charing Cross Hospital.
